Oh my goodness! I just hopped over here after seeing your image and reading your words at Broken Light.
What a talented and insightful young man you are.
Your photos are very much to my personal taste. Bravo!
well man, if the mountain won’t come to Muhammad then Muhammad must go to the mountain..
I am sorry Mr. Halley but your title and headline, “Photography” is all wrong. This is absolutely not, “Photography”. This is, “Art”. You might re-consider your labeling….. claudy
Hi Claudy, thanks for your opinion. It seems like this “What is photography” argument will never die. It has been around since the beginning.. quite literally! You see, back when photography started gaining momentum and painters started to move to that medium, others complained that there was just no talent in photography. There was nothing to it, it was simply “take a photograph,” it was absolutely not, “art!” MANY years later after film photography gained its footing, digital photography came along. Wouldn’t you know it, film fanatics are at it with the “digital photography is NOT true photography!” argument.
One of my old photography professors once said, “If it was taken with a camera, it IS photography.” And I have lived to that ever since.
Sir,
If I may be so humble to disagree whole heartedly! To me the issue is not if a camera was used to capture an image but the result of a human.
Here is the dictionary…
Art 1. the quality, production, expression, or realm of what is beautiful, or more than ordinary significance.
Now photography can be Art but not necessarily.
Photography 1. the process or art of producing images of objects on sensitized surfaces by chemical action of light or other forms of radiant energy.
Now for such a definition for me is more about a process than an artist to me in my understanding of the definition of Photography. I also know from working at the Nielsen TV Ratings for many many years that since we are a scientific research organization we used statistics in everything. The Occupational Chart by which Nielsen classifieds all people in the research has atop of all other positions or careers or however you want to say it first above all others is Artist….. then comes Doctor, Lawyer, Architect and then down even lower you would find Photographer.
So in my mind it is the highest of praise to refer and correct you as artist….. claudy
Photography is art, that is my opinion. I am going to school for photography, and I work in the photographic field.
Cheers.
Correct! It certainly can be and in your case it is Art indeed! So that it why I would go straight to the top and call it Art. For instance, when looking for Art no one would turn to the Photography section of the Yellow Pages they would look under Art. I have a hunch that at some point in your career you will start calling your work Art because it is. I would say exceptionally talented and in my opinion much more than Photography. We shall see what the future holds…… claudy
